The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates for the second straight day with a 2-1 walk-off victory in extra innings last night. After winning in 11-innings Tuesday, the Orioles won in 10-innings last night.
Paul Skenes started for the Bucs and pitched five scoreless innings of two-hit baseball. He struck out eight and lowered his major league-best ERA to 1.92. He pitched a season-low 64 pitches as the Pirates began to manage the number of innings he will throw for the remainder of the season.
The National League Cy Young Award front-runner reached 203 strikeouts for the season. He has done that over 178 innings, becoming the second Pirates starter since 1901 to reach 200 strikeouts in 180 innings or fewer. Oliver Perez became the first in 2004.
The Pirates lone run in last night’s game came on a Spencer Horwitz home run in the fourth inning. The Bucs managed just one other hit, despite six walks by Orioles starting pitcher Tyler Wells. They went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The Bucs and Orioles complete their series this afternoon at 1:05pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 12:40pm. Johan Oviedo will start for the Pirates, who head to Washington for the weekend after the game.
