The Pittsburgh Penguins will face the Philadelphia Flyers in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs beginning this weekend. The Flyers clinched the final Eastern Conference playoff spot last night, following a 3-2 victory over Carolina in a shootout.
The series will feature two Pennsylvania teams who have not been in the post-season for several years. Pittsburgh clinched its first playoff berth since 2022 with a win against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday. Philadelphia last reached the postseason in 2020. They are led by former Penguin Rick Tocchet, the long-time Flyer who is their head coach. The Penguins went 2-0-2 against the Flyers this season. The playoff schedule is yet to be announced.
The Penguins complete their regular season tonight in St. Louis. Face-off is 9:30pm.
The Buffalo Sabres have won the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division, their first division title since 2010, and that was the last year they made the NHL playoffs.
