The Pittsburgh Pirates lost their fourth game in a row last night, when they fell 5-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Bucs had fallen behind 5-1 in the game before mounting a comeback with two runs in the seventh inning and a run in the eighth. Cardinals rookie outfielder Nathan Church robbed Pirates third baseman Nick Gonzales of what would have been a game-winning two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning.
The Pirates outhit the Cardinals for the second straight night, 9 hits to six, but for the second straight night, had a starting pitcher struggle. Bubba Chandler fell to 1-3 allowing three earned runs and walking four over five innings. He allowed just three hits while striking out six, but one of the hits was a two-run home run. The Pirates went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners.
Gonzales now has a 10-game hitting streak. His .324 average is third best in the National League.
The Pirates will try to avoid a series sweep this afternoon at 12:35pm. Paul Skenes will start for the Pirates. WISR pre-game is 12:10pm.
The Cincinnati Reds arrive in Pittsburgh Friday night.
Pirates starting pitcher Jared Jones made his first rehab start in Florida Wednesday. He retired all nine batters he faced, striking out five. He had several pitches over 100 miles per hour.
