The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 with a walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth inning last night. Elly De La Cruz doubled off Gregory Soto and scored when the Pirates couldn’t complete a double play that would have forced extra innings. The loss was the Pirates third in a row and they have fallen to 55-55 overall. The Pirates used five relievers in the game. Brandon Lowe hit his 23rd home run of the season to tie the game late, he now leads the team with 70 runs batted in.
The Pirates left seven men on base in the game, and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The two teams meet for game two of this four game series tonight at 6:10pm. Paul Skenes will start for the Bucs. He is 9-9 with a 3.65 ERA this season. Pre-game on WISR begins at 5:45pm.
The Pirates have fallen 2-1/2 games behind Arizona and Philadelphia in the chase for a National League Wild Card. The Chicago Cubs are the first Wild Card.
