Frank Beard, the longtime drummer for Texas rock legends ZZ Top, died Monday while in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas. He was 77. No official cause of death was given. ZZ Top canceled shows in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs but will resume touring this weekend in Austin. Though not a founding member, Beard was the band’s definitive drummer, renowned for mastering the Texas shuffle groove heard on classics like “Tush” and “La Grange.” Billy Gibbons recalled their first session: “I knew that Frank Beard had the kind of chops I was looking for. He played fiercely.” Beard is survived by his wife Debbie and three children. Story URL
