The Pittsburgh Pirates hit two home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 Wednesday afternoon. Rafael Flores, Jr. and Brandon Lowe hit solo home runs off Tigers closer Kenley Jansen in a dramatic walk-off at PNC Park. Flores hit two home runs in the game, for the second time in a month. He hit a solo home run pinch-hitting for Henry Davis in the seventh inning prior to the ninth inning shot.
Four Pirates relievers held the Tigers scoreless over the final 4-2/3rds innings in relief of starting pitcher Paul Skenes. Skenes left the game with one out in the fifth inning. He had allowed three earned runs on four hits, walking four and striking out five.
Mason Montgomery was the winning pitcher. He allowed two hits while striking out two in the top of the ninth inning.
The Pirates had outhit the Tigers 8-7, but had stranded eight runners in the game. Detroit had seven hits, but also stranded seven.
The Pirates picked up a game in the Wild Card standings with the victory. They are now three games under .500 and 5-1/2 games behind San Diego for the final playoff spot in the National League.
The Pirates open a three-game series with the Dodgers in Los Angeles Friday night. They visit San Diego for three games beginning Monday night.
