The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2 in 12-innings last night in the opening game of a three-game series. Nick Gonzales led off the 12th-inning with an RBI single driving in Jared Triolo from second base. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bucs, who are now 7-1/2 back in the Wild Card chase.
Esmerlyn Valdez hit his 15th home run of the year and Rafael Flores, Jr. had an RBI double in the sixth inning, providing the other Pirate runs in the game.
Braxton Ashcraft started the game and went six innings, allowing one run on four hits. Six relievers followed him. Luke Weaver allowed a run in the eighth inning which tied the game, but four more relievers held the Padres scoreless. Kirby Yates earned the win with a scoreless 11th inning. Yohan Ramirez earned his second save of the year with a scoreless 12th inning.
The two teams play again tonight at 9:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 9:15pm. Paul Skenes will start for the Pirates.
