The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 last night to open a three-game series at PNC Park. Brewers starting pitcher, and the likely National League Cy Young Award winner this season, Jacob Misiorowski pitched five shutout innings, allowing five hits. He walked one and struck out seven for his 15th win in 20 decisions this season.
Six Pirate relievers were used in the game. Lake Bachar took the loss after allowing one run in his opening two innings. The Brewers put the game away by scoring four runs off reliever Gregory Soto. who managed just 1/3rd of an inning. He allowed two hits and walked two. Soto had thrown 12 scoreless innings of relief before blowing a save in Chicago Saturday. He has now allowed six runs in his last two appearances.
Brandon Lowe hit his 30th home run of the season giving the Pirates their lone run in the eighth inning.
The Pirates had 10 hits in the game, but stranded 10 runners. They were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Nearly 24,000 fans attended last night’s game, which honored Roberto Clemente. Every Pirate wore his famed #21 jersey in the game, and the first 21,000 fans received a Clemente bobblehead.
The two teams meet again tonight at 6:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:15pm. Jared Jones will start for the Pirates tonight.
The Brewers victory, combined with the Chicago Cubs losing to Atlanta last night, clinched the National League Central Division for Milwaukee. They are now 94-57 overall, and are the first team in baseball to clinch their division.
