The Butler County Community College volleyball team defeated Sandhills Community College of North Carolina 3-2 Saturday in the Mid-Atlantic District title game, to secure a second consecutive trip to the national championship tournament for the first time in program history. The victory was the 500th career win for Pioneers head coach Rob Snyder, who is in his 27th season.
BC3 took the first two set 25-14 and 25-9, before losing outside hitter Dakota Weldon to illness during the third set. #2-ranked Sandhills then took back-to-back wins 20-25 and 17-25, before the #4-ranked Pioneers captured the deciding set 15-10.
Pioneer All-American middle hitter Josie Russo had a career-high 23 kills. Anore Robare had career-highs of 46 assists and 19 digs. Molly Bissell had a career-high 19 digs as well. Defensive specialist Sarah Lucas had 27 of BC3’s 95 digs in the District-winning match.
This will be the Pioneers fifth appearance in the national championship tournament. They placed fifth in 2002, sixth in 2021 and 2009. Last season, BC3 finished ninth overall after receiving an “at-large” invitiation.
Seedings and brackets for the tournament will be announced at 6pm Tuesday (Nov 4) on the NJCAA Network.
The 16-team national championship tournament will be held Nov. 13-15 in the Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
