The Hoffman Family, new owners of the Pittsburgh Penguins, held their first news conference in Pittsburgh Thursday. The new ownership will likely see the end of the Penguins relationship with the Wheeling Nailers. The Hoffman’s own the Florida Everblades, and want that team as their Eastern Conference Hockey League affiliate. The Wheeling club has been the Penguins’ ECHL affiliate for the past 29 seasons, the longest active agreement in the league. The Penguins own their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, so the ECHL switch would bring all three levels of the franchise under the Hoffmann umbrella.
