Dennis Locorriere, founding member and lead singer of seventies country rock band Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, died Saturday at age 76 following a “long and courageous battle with kidney disease.” The New Jersey-born musician co-founded the group in 1969, initially serving as bassist and vocalist. Dr. Hook achieved fame through collaborations with children’s author Shel Silverstein, who wrote songs for their first two albums including hits “Sylvia’s Mother” and “Carry Me, Carrie.” Their biggest success came with “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone,'” sung by bandmate Ray Sawyer. After shortening their name to Dr. Hook, the band scored additional hits with “When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman,” “Sexy Eyes,” and “A Little Bit More.” Following the band’s 1985 farewell tour, Locorriere retained rights to the Dr. Hook name and continued touring until his retirement in November 2025. The Strokes will continue their upcoming Reality Awaits Tour without founding guitarist Nick Valensi, who is taking a “temporary break” from the summer dates. The band announced Valensi’s absence following their Thursday night performance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where he was noticeably missing during their rendition of “Falling Out Of Love.” Steve Schiltz, former singer and guitarist from early 2000s NYC band Longwave, will substitute for Valensi during the tour. “Nick will be taking a temporary break from the scheduled tour, but we look forward to his return,” the band stated on social media. Schiltz previously filled in during April shows in San Francisco, though Valensi returned for their Coachella performances. The tour launches in June after their Bonnaroo festival appearance on June 12th. Their new album Reality Awaits releases June 26th. Story URL
