Several Pitt, Penn State and West Virginia products are under consideration for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation this week, as well as Slippery Rock University’s all-time wins leader and former head coach Dr. George Mihalik, who led The Rock from 1988-to-2015, is also on the ballot. Dr. Mihalik has the most wins in SRU football history, boasting 22 winning seasons in his 28 years leading the program. Mihalik is a six-time PSAC Coach of the Year who won or shared eight PSAC Western Division championships and made six trips to the NCAA playoffs. George finished his career with a perfect 17-0 home record in his final three seasons.
Other local names on the nominees include:
–Brad Tokar, former running back at Westminster, who is still their all-time leading rusher (7,523 yards). Tokar helped lead Westminster to two NAIA Division II national championships. He was a First-team Little All-American in 1990.
–Clarion tight end Gary McCauley, who still holds two tight end records for the Golden Eagles.
–Carnegie Mellon University linebacker Kenneth Muraswski.
–Long-time West Chester head coach Bill Zwaan.
–Bloomsburg running back Franklin Quiteh, who won the 2013 Harlon Hill award and is still second all-time in Division II with 7,523 career yards. He is the only DII running back ever to top 2,000 yards in a season three times.
–East Stroudsburg quarterback (and now their head coach) Jimmy Terwilliger, who is the only player in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference history to become First-team All-PSAC in all four years of his career. He was also a three-time Harlon Hill nominee and one-time winner.
Former Pitt wide receiver Antonio Bryant, quarterback Matt Cavanaugh, running back Craig “Ironhead” Heyward and coach Jackie Sherrill are among 227 individuals who could be enshrined in next year’s class. Also up for consideration are Penn State wideout Bobby Engram.
