The Washington Nationals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 last night at PNC Park. The Nationals tagged Pirates starting pitcher Mitch Keller for three runs in the first inning of the game. Keller allowed five earned runs over four innings. He walked four and struck out three.
Three relievers pitched five shutout innings to close the game. The Bucs had opportunities throughout the game, including the ninth inning, but couldn’t tie the game. They went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position again.
Brandon Lowe hit his seventh home run in the game, but was pinch-hit for in the seventh inning. Marcel Ozuna broke out of a significant slump with two hits, including a double.
The Pirates and Nationals meet again tonight at 6:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:15pm.
The two teams close their four-game series tomorrow afternoon.
Baltimore rookie manager Craig Albernaz was hit in the face with a foul ball in Monday night’s game with Arizona. He suffered a broken jaw and multiple fractures in his cheek. Ironically, he was struck by a Jeremiah Jackson foul ball. Jackson later hit a grand-slam for the Orioles and keyed a 7-1 comeback for a 9-7 victory. Albernaz was back in the dugout last night.
