The Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees split their doubleheader Wednesday. The Bucs won Game 1 5-3 in 10-innings, before falling in the night-cap 2-0. The Pirates received very solid starting pitching in both games. Mitch Keller pitched five shutout innings in the opener, allowing three hits and striking out six. Carmen Mlodzinski blew his first save, allowing three runs in the seventh inning. But, the Bucs scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to win the game. Both Nick and Jacob Gonzales hit home runs for the Pirates.
Keller outdueled former Pirates Gerrit Cole, who allowed the two Pirates home runs, but he did not walk a batter and struck out 11.
Bubba Chandler pitched shutout baseball into the seventh inning of Game 2, but Brandon Eisert allowed the Yankees their two runs in the seventh inning to take the loss.
With the split, the Pirates have fallen a half-game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final National League Wild Card.
The Pirates are off today, then host the Chicago Cubs for three games beginning Friday night at PNC Park. The Diamondbacks come to town Monday.
