Pirates general manager Ben Cherington made three trades prior to last night’s deadline. The biggest was acquiring New York Mets reliever Luke Weaver in exchange for their #9-ranked prospect in shortstop Sammy Stafura. Weaver has posted a 1.84 ERA over 44 appearances this season, primarily as the Mets “set-up” reliever. He signed a two-year deal worth $22 million last off-season, and the Mets are sending money to the Pirates as part of the trade. The 21-year old Stafura was acquired in the Ke’Bryan Hayes trade last year with Cincinnati. He led all of minor league baseball last month with 14 home runs and 75 total bases, but had been hitting .233 prior to the breakout.
The Pirates also acquired Miami reliever Lake Bachar in exchange for reliever Brian Bidois and two other minor league players. One was outfielder Brian Sanchez, who was currently at High-A Greensboro. He was acquired in the trade that sent David Bednar to the New York Yankees.
The Bucs also picked up veteran reliever Kirby Yates from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for right-hander Kyle Robinson, who had been at Double-A Altoona.
