The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 Sunday to avoid a three-game series sweep by the Bucs. Carmen Mlodzinski allowed five runs, four earned over 3-2/3rds innings in his latest start. The Pirates managed just two hits while striking out 18 times in the game.
Sunday’s loss followed a 6-3 win in 10-innings Saturday, and a 6-0 win Friday night behind the pitching of Paul Skenes, who took a perfect game into the seventh inning. Also in that game, rookie Konnor Griffin celebrated his 20th birthday with three hits, including his first Major League home run.
The Pirates have returned home to open a seven-game home-stand, with the first four games against the St. Louis Cardinals beginning tonight at 6:40pm.
Left-handed reliever Mason Montgomery will start tonight’s game and will be followed by Wilbur Dotel. It is Braxton Ashcraft’s turn in the rotation, but he was placed on the bereavement list Saturday and is not eligible to return for three games.
The Pirates begin the night in third place in the National League Central Division. They are two games behind first-place Cincinnati. They are 16-12 overall. The Cardinals are 14-13 and 3-1/2 behind the Reds and are tied with Milwaukee for last place.
The Pirates announced yesterday that pitcher Jared Jones will make a rehabilitation start in Bradenton today.
