The Pittsburgh Pirates were officially eliminated from the post-season over the weekend, but did sweep the Kansas City Royals following a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon. Catcher Rafael Flores, Jr. hit a two-run home run to win the game for the Bucs in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was his 10th home run of the year. Mason Montgomery earned his 16th save of the season in a game that the Pirates used five relievers. Montgomery has now had 24 consecutive scoreless appearances, the most for a Pirates pitcher since 1901.
Oneil Cruz hit his 20th home run of the season, reaching the 20-20 plateau in round-trippers and stolen bases. He joins Andrew McCutchen and Barry Bonds as the only Pirates to have three consecutive 20-20 seasons.
The Pirates also won 6-5 Saturday night and 8-5 Friday. They are 79-77 overall this season.
The Bucs are off today, then host the St. Louis Cardinals for three games beginning Tuesday. They complete their season with three games in Detroit this weekend.
