The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in 10-innings last night at PNC Park. Brandon Lowe hit a 10th-inning single to drive in Billy Cook with the winning run. Lowe had his second consecutive three-hit night. Reliever Mason Montgomery pitched around an error by third baseman Nick Gonzales, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th, and earned the victory.
Bryan Reynolds drove home a game-tying run with a double in the eighth inning for the Pirates. Mitch Keller allowed two runs while pitching into the sixth inning. He allowed six hits, walked a batter and struck out four. Four Pirates relievers, including Montgomery, held Arizona scoreless the remainder of the game.
Last night’s victory has tied the Bucs with the Diamondbacks for the third and final National League Wild Card spot.
The Pirates lost rookie slugger Esmerlyn Valdez in the fourth inning to a hand injury, after he was hit by a Merrill Kelly pitch.
The two teams play again tonight at 6:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:15pm. Bubba Chandler will start for the Pirates. He is 3-8 with a 4.47 ERA this season.
