The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Washington Nationals 6-1 last night at PNC Park. Oneil Cruz hit his first career grand slam home run, it was part of a five-run seventh inning. Catcher Henry Davis had given the Bucs a 1-0 lead with his first home run of the year in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher Bailey Falter did not allow a run over seven innings to earn his first victory of the season. He allowed just two hits.
He faced the minimum 21 batters over his outing
The Pirates seventh-inning rally came after a benches-clearing incident earlier in the inning. It came after Washington reliever Jorge Lopez hit Bryan Reynolds with a pitch, then threw a pitch at Andrew McCutchen’s head during the next at-bat. Lopez was ejected from the game.
The Pirates and Nationals complete their four-game series this afternoon at 12:35pm. WISR pre-game begins at 12:10pm. Andrew Heaney will start for the Bucs. Former Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams will start for Washington.
The Pirates host the Cleveland Guardians for a three-game series beginning Friday night.
