The Pittsburgh Pirates won their fifth game in a row last night with a 1-0 defeat of the St. Louis Cardinals. Catcher Henry Davis drove the lone run of the game in via a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Davis was also involved in tagging out two Cardinals runners at home plate during the game, one of those came in the top of the ninth inning.
Paul Skenes did not figure into the decision. He pitched five shutout innings, allowing five hits. He walked one and struck out five. Isaac Mattson won the game in relief. David Bednar earned his 12th save of the season.
The Bucs and Cards complete their three-game series this afternoon at PNC Park. First pitch is 12:35pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 12:10pm. Mitch Keller will start for the Pirates. Sonny Gray starts for the Cardinals.
After an off-day Thursday, the Pirates begin at nine-game road trip on Independence Day in Seattle. The trip will take the team up to the All-Star Break. The Bucs will return home for a nine-game homestand after the break July 18th.
