The Detroit Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 Monday night at PNC Park, in the opening game of a three-game series. Carmen Mlodzinski’s return to the Pirates rotation since the injury to Mitch Keller has not been smooth. His first game back in the rotation in Miami, he allowed four earned runs in 2-1/3rd innings. Last night, he allowed four earned runs on eight hits over three innings. The Bucs fell behind 7-1 in the nationally-televised game before posting four runs in the sixth inning.
Brandon Lowe and Nick Yorke had four of the Pirates six hits. Yorke drove in three of the five Pirates runs. The top three batters in the lineup went 0-for-13 with six strikeouts.
The two teams play again tonight. First pitch is 6:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:15pm. Braxton Ashcraft will start for the Pirates. He is 12-5 with a 3.88 ERA this season.
The victory for the Tigers moved them into a tie with Baltimore and Texas for the final American League Wild Card spot. The Tigers are three games under .500.
The Pirates fell back to five games under .500. They are 6-1/2 games out of a National League Wild Card. There are three other teams in front of them who are chasing San Diego and Philadelphia. The Chicago Cubs are six games ahead as the top NL Wild Card. The Milwaukee Brewers continue to carry the base record in the majors at 77-48.
