Road course ace Shane Van Gisbergen won the Nascar Cup Series race in Mexico City Sunday evening. He held off Christopher Bell in Nascar’s first-ever international point-race. Van Gisbergen won the race despite his plane having mechanical issues that delayed his weekend arrival, and then he became seriously ill after winning the race pole position Saturday. The victory gives him a spot in the Cup series post-season championship run.
Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin missed Sunday’s race following the birth of his third child. Hamlin has already qualified for the Cup Series post-season. He will return this weekend as the drivers head to Pocono Raceway in Eastern Pennsylvania.
