Butler County is releasing more information about a data security incident that occurred late last year.
County officials say they were alerted by federal law enforcement on October 2nd about suspicious activity on their computer network.
The county immediately began working with in a nationally recognized digital forensics team to secure and investigate. Later in the month, the county determined that an unauthorized actor accessed personally identifiable information maintained in the County’s network.
County investigators completed their review of the impacted data on January 22nd. Written notice and complimentary credit monitoring services are being provided to those affected. The County continues to cooperate with a federal law enforcement investigation of this incident.
The County also is closely monitoring and strengthening systems, data, and network access but encourages those who may have been affected to pay close attention to financial accounts and credit reports.
