U.S. Marshals are warning about a phone scam happening in Western Pennsylvania.
The scammers have been calling claiming to collect a fine in lieu of an arrest.
They will ask for payment by gift cards, wiring money, or making a cryptocurrency transaction. U.S. Marshals and the federal courts will never ask for payment in these fashions. The scammers will also provide a fake case number, docket number, or warrant number in attempt to legitimize the claim.
There is also the possibility the scammers will provide a real phone number and address but this information is often made publicly available.
If you believe you have received one of these calls or are a victim, you are asked to contact your local FBI office or file a consumer compliant with the Federal Trade Commission.
