Legislation to regulate e-bikes has been introduced in the state house.
E-bikes, short for electric bicycles, can reach speeds up to 28 miles per hour. E-bikes have avoided regulation in the past due to cyclists saying regulation would hurt regular bike riders.
Some have called for riders to be licensed, registered, and insured.
House Bill 2703, doesn’t require riders to register with the state, but creates a new classification for municipalities to enact e-bike ordinances treating them differently than regular bikes.
The bill would also raise fines for speeding and reckless e-bike riders.
The bill has been introduced in the state house transportation committee.
