As the 2026 general election nears and poll worker recruitment begins, the Secretary of the Commonwealth honored poll workers yesterday.
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission designated August 11 as National Poll Worker Recruitment Day to “inspire civic engagement and encourage people to sign up to become a poll worker.”
While in Philadelphia yesterday celebrating the day, Secretary Al Schmidt, a former City Commissioner that ran elections for 10 years, knows the role poll workers play in democracy.
“I know the critical role that poll workers play in our democracy. We depend on about 45,000 poll workers staffing more than 9,000 polling places across the Commonwealth each Election Day.”
To apply to become a poll worker you must be a registered voter, but 17-year-old high school Juniors and Seniors can be a poll worker with permission from their school principal and guardian.
