The Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company officially broke ground on their new building yesterday.
Members of the fire department along with local leaders gathered to celebrate the new facility on Evans City Road, which has been a long time coming according to Connoquenessing VFC President Matt McConnell.
“We bought this property in 1985 from the Treesdale Company with the hopes of building a building some day. It was dubbed the impossible dream when I joined at age 16, and now we’re here today,” McConnell said.
Although it’s been a long-planned vision, McConnell said a new facility is needed.
“It’s one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state. It’s a growing area and we need to be able to adapt and expand to offer the best fire services we can,” McConnell said.
The roughly $4 million project was aided significantly through a 2024 federal grant secured by Congressman Mike Kelly.
“I used to come up and down this road a lot, and I never thought the property was big enough. But, standing here now, it’s a perfect spot,” Kelly said. “When I saw the old station, I realized you can’t operate efficiently and effectively as you want to. They have access all over the place, which is key.”
“They have been so patient for so long and have never given up on that idea. It’s not so much they wanted a new fire station, it’s that they wanted to respond more quickly and effectively.”
Construction on the project will ramp up this December and officials are planning for it to be completed by early summer.
