As the state budget impasse continues, Butler County Community College has been using federal funding to help fill the gap.
In September, BC3 received $5.2 million in Employee Retention Tax Credits (ERC), a COVID era tax credit from the CARES Act and American Rescue Plan.
At yesterday’s board of trustees meeting, BC3 officials say they’ve used $3.2 million of the ERC money to fill budget gaps.
The rest of the funding will run out in January, but by December the school will look to take a loan out to fill the gaps until the state finalizes a budget.
Vice President for Administration and Finance Jake Friel isn’t concerned currently about the budget gaps.
“It’s concerning, but we’re not panicking. We can make this. I think our cash flow aligns with the deadlines are for the legislature,” Friel said. “I think the legislature will probably push it for a little longer, and then they’re going to get something passed.”
Friel also said the school will not be applying for state loan program over concerns of legal battles if the treasurer is authorized to hand out that money.
