The Butler Area School District is joining many others in the county to implement a cell phone policy for high school students.
At their meeting Monday night, the Butler School Board approved the first reading of a policy that would require students in grades 9 to 12 to turn off their phones and keep them in their bags from bell to bell.
Although the state currently has a bill pending that could make a ban on cell phone use during school hours a state law, Butler Superintendent Dr. Brian White advised the board not to wait for that to become official since all studies and research confirm that banning the devices during the school day helps improve student attentiveness.
This policy is expected to be finalized with a vote on the second reading next month.
