This past Sunday was World Elder Abuse Day and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is reminding residents about the prevalence of elder fraud.
According to the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office, criminals stole over $151 million from Pennsylvania seniors last year which ranks 8th in the nation.
The FBI investigates financial scams targeting seniors, including investment scams, technical/customer support schemes, money mule and romance scams, and others. Seniors are advised to verify the legitimacy of businesses on websites such as Better Business Bureau, resist the pressure to act quickly, and never provide unsolicited or unverified sources with personal information.
Anyone who believes that they may be a victim of fraud or know someone who has should call 1-800-CALL FBI, visit the tips.fbi.gov website, or provide information through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (ic3.gov).
