As the students get ready for the upcoming school year in Mars, teachers remain without a contract.
A large number of teachers and concerned community members attended a second consecutive school board meeting last night, voicing support for a “fair and equitable” new contract. A Mars board member stated that a hearing connected to the fact-finding process is taking place today with a neutral arbitrator followed by a report within ten days. The board could vote to accept that report at next month’s meeting
The board also authorized the purchase of a vehicle for use by school police.
After hearing from Director of School Safety and Security Jeff James at their Tuesday night meeting, the board voted by a 7 to 2 margin to purchase a vehicle of James’ choosing as soon as possible and have it upfitted at a cost not to exceed $30,000.
This amount has already been budgeted for this purpose. James stated that the vehicle will not be used for roving patrols but will help with serving as a deterrent to potential bad actors as well as a tool for traffic control during activities when large amounts of people are moving near busy highways like football games.
