A bill introduced by a local legislator that would help protect healthcare workers from surgical smoke is one step closer to becoming law.
House Bill 27, co-sponsored by State Representative Tim Bonner (R-Butler, Mercer) would ensure that operating rooms utilize surgical smoke evacuation systems to combat the adverse health effects of surgical smoke.
During surgery, cauterization and other procedures can burn human tissue, producing smoke that contains potentially harmful chemicals and microscopic particles. Nurses, surgeons and other operating room staff can be exposed to this smoke repeatedly throughout their careers.
Many other states require operating rooms in hospitals to utilize smoke evacuation systems. This bipartisan bill will now advance to the desk of Governor Josh Shapiro.
