The Butler County Sheriff’s office is alerting residents to an ongoing scam attempting to coerce people into paying fake fines or legal costs over the phone.
In a release, the sheriff’s office says they will never call and ask for payment over the phone by any means.
The caller will most likely have publicly available information on you to make you think the call is legitimate and try to keep you on the phone. The caller may also mention false or public legal document.
If you receive a call as such, you should immediately hang up.
If you are unsure if the call is legitimate, hang up immediately and call the office they are representing to be sure the call is legitimate.
Finally, never give any financial information out over the phone.
