Pennsylvania’s auditor general is releasing an audit of the Turnpike Commission that found some slight improvements, but also lingering issues.
Tim DeFoor released the findings from the audit last week. He found that while the Turnpike is making it harder for drivers to dodge toll bills, there is still a significant amount of unpaid tolls.
From June 2024 to May 2025, there was nearly $230 million of unpaid tolls.
He also said a law requiring payments to PennDOT continues to hamstring the Commission, as the Turnpike will be $1.6 billion to PennDOT over the next 30 years.
DeFoor recommended assembling a task force to find a better way to collect tolls, monitor debt collection agencies, and make it easier for drivers to pay tolls by using tools like Venmo.
