The Pennsylvania Insurance Department is reminding residents to be cautious and weary as they seek contractors for repairs due to summer storms.
The PID has provide these tips on how to be victim of a scam when looking for a contractor to complete storm damage repairs.
- Ask the contractor for several referrals.
- Ask where the business is located?
- How long the contractor has been in business.
- What the contractor’s expectance level is with storm damage projects?
Contractors who earn more than $5,000 in a business year must also be registered with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. Before paying or signing a contract, homeowners should ask for the contractors Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) number and verify it with the AG’s office or on the PID website.
